In 1968 I met Doug Andrews at the Art College of Ontario in Toronto. We hit it off immediately, and one day while we were sitting in the cafeteria laughing like a bunch of two-year olds on a sugar high he said, "I hope we're still friends when you're 64."

I doubt he had any idea he'd bake a chocolate cake for my 64th, but that's exactly what happened this past week.
On the evening of Friday, June 6th we attended the Opening Celebration of his art exhibit "Sketches of Douro-Dummer" at the Douro-Dummer Township Library Art Gallery.
By definition sketches are smaller works, painted on location and completed within a few hours. They differ from his larger paintings that take months to finish in his studio. He has received many awards for his paintings in exhibitions across Canada and he is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists. After farmsitting so many times and taking the dogs for a walk in these very fields, John spotted "Winter on the Farm" and HAD to have it. He insisted a red dot be placed on the tag before another person could snap it up. Good thing too, because approximately 60 people attended the celebration and four more paintings sold within the hour.
On the back of the program Doug shared this tidbit of wisdom: When buying from an artist, you're buying more than just a painting. You're buying hundreds of hours of failure and experimentation. You are buying days, weeks, months of frustration and moments of PURE JOY. You aren't just buying a thing, you are buying a piece of heart, a part of a soul, a moment of someone's life. Most importantly you're buying the artist more time to do something they are passionate about.
