Modern Montpellier

Having toured historic section of Montpellier we wanted to explore the modern side of the city as well. The square known as Place d'Europe seemed the perfect place to begin. It's invigorating, inventive and inviting as can be seen from the glassed arc de triumph. 

We took tram number 2 from Jacou and at Le Corum station switched to line number 2. We got off at the Place d'Europe stop and while our eyes were focused on this view...

We happened to look behind us and were astonished by these two identical, curved complexes that house both apartments and offices. 

Walking toward the arc de triomphe we passed numerous cafes, bars and grills that offer ample selection of where to eat or drink.

But as Mr. B had packed a delicious picnic lunch we opted for a park bench instead. This was our view.

After lunch we walked across the canal to the other side and encountered a few ducks.

I have to admit they seemed quite content to call this stretch of concrete home and why not? They know a great spot when they see it. O either side of the glass arc de triomphe are two private residence complexes (for humans). My guess is they're one of Montpellier's most prestigious addresses. 

Continuing back toward the historic centre of Montpellier we walked along a pedestrian mall lined with more cafes and restaurants. The overhang on this building caught my attention and seemed to compliment both sides of Montpellier (modern and historic). 

Last stop was the Polygone shopping complex - a three level shopping mall.

We walked in the entrance above and managed to exit with the same amount of Euros in our pockets! A short walk brought us back to 'La Com' where we caught the tram back to Jacou and reminisced about the wonders of both historic and modern Montpellier.
