Most of the clay rooftops visible in the header photograph above are part of the old town proper and this section of Nice is a must see for anyone visiting the area. The wonderful thing is it's not just a tourist destination all dolled up like a Disney set. It's home sweet home for a great many Nicois.
There is always something new to discover in this vibrant community and as it is just a stone's throw from our port side apartment we count ourselves fortunate to be able to return whenever the mood strikes.
Some of the streets are wide enough to accommodate vehicles and most allow motorcycle access. Thankfully, most drivers are considerate of pedestrians and rarely spoil the mood of this magical place.
Narrow alleyways wind and curve, going up and down hill in a maze like fashion. At the beginning we made sure to carry a map with us (see middle photo below), but now we can pretty much find our way.
Because this is an actual community and has been for hundreds of years everything one could ever need or want can be found a few yards from one's doorstep. Below are just a few of what's on offer...

We also spotted numerous antique, furniture and perfume shops as well as a pharmacy, real estate office, cinema and other essential services.
It's a safe guess to mention there are so many cafes, bistros and restaurants in old town that even after visiting a different one every day for the next three months there would still be many more to try. The possibilities really are endless!
The next post will focus on the daily flower market, the Saturday morning farmer's market as well as the spiritual side of old town. As they say here in France, "bonne journee" - "have a good day!"
