Haut-de-Cagnes is one of our favourite medieval villages on the Cote d'Azur.
We first visited in 2017. With its scenic hilltop location, close proximity to Nice and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean this vibrant community appeals to the senses on so many levels.
We have countless photographs from our previous visit, but that did not stop us from taking more. (Many, many more!)
Duplicates or not, I just had to include them in this post. 😁

While the stairs in the above photo may look intimidatin, bus #44 from the Square Bourdet stop in Cagnes-sur-Mer drops passengers off at the doorstep (free of charge), so if one chooses there is no climbing involved. Although, in order to explore the rest of the village, there are ups and downs everywhere!
Another surprise occurred when we entered the square that is on the south side of the Grimaldi Castle via this archway. (The floral decoration is for the May 1st fete.)
See that short door on the bottom ride side of the yellow building? It's actually the entrance to the church and we've walked past it at least a dozen times and had no idea it was there.
For whatever reason we did not associate the bell tower with a church. Nor did we notice the word "eglise" painted on the door.
Entering the Eglise Saint-Pierre via the doorway feels almost claustrophobic, but once inside that feeling quickly dissipates. The view from the balcony is breathtaking and then one realizes much of the church is actually underground.
Europe endured a long, cold winter and the south of France was not exempt. Flowers are at least a month behind where they were when we visited last year and so we relished every single bloom.
Before returning to Nice we took our time to wander around semi familiar streets, yet we also discovered something new around every corner. That's the joy of Haut-de-Cagnes.

No doubt we'll return to Haut-de-Cagnes on our next visit to Nice. Can't wait!
