2018: A Very Memorable Year

Our memories of the past year includes friends (both new and old), family, travel and housesitting in the UK, Spain and France. 2018 also brought about a change of scenery as both ourselves and our daughter and son-in-law purchased new homes this year. While we're not ready to sell our Elliot Lake property just yet, John and I are grateful for the opportunity to explore the nation's capital this winter at our leisure while we hibernate in our 1-bedroom condo.

One of the highlights was the Christmas Lights Across Canada show on Parliament Hill.

Another day this month we strolled along Wellington Street past the Parliament Buildings, Rideau Canal and Chateau Laurier Hotel.

It seemed fitting to continue east to the Byward Market and the Aulde Dubliner & Pour House for a late lunch and pint.

I ordered fish and chips...

...while John selected the Chicken Curry and Chips.

Our condo is everything we'd hoped it would be. It's comfortable, cosy and within walking distance to most amenities.

The floor to ceiling view is lovely both day and night...

...although I have to admit I did a double-take when I spotted the window cleaner opposite our balcony one morning. Yikes! Definitely not a job for the fainthearted.

Another joy of 2018 was that for the first time in seven years we found ourselves at home and were able to put up and decorate a Christmas tree. We found this "pencil" variety and think it's perfectly suited when space is at a premium - nor does it block the view.

Having downsized numerous times the few decorations we've retained have sentimental value and include keepsakes from when our daughter was young, handmade trinkets made by yours truly, as well as souvenirs from our various travels.

Christmas would be incomplete without a scrumptious turkey dinner (cooked by Chef John).

On Christmas Day we went swimming and had the pool to ourselves. (FYI, I've discovered there is absolutely nothing better than watching the snow fall while being immersed in the water!)

Boxing Day we sauntered along Ottawa River Pathway.

We walked as far as the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club House (below right) and then retraced our steps.

In closing John and I wish you all the best in 2019. Happy New Year!
