A Walk to Villefranche-sur-Mer

We've been to Villefranche-sur-Mer a number of times, but have always taken the bus from Nice. On this visit, I felt comfortable walking the 5 kms (one way) and I'm ever so happy we did as the scenery along the Princess Grace de Monaco Blvd is stunning.

Our route for the most part follows the sea and rugged coastline

A fabulous destination in Villefranche-sur-Mer is the sidewalk cafe outside of the Welcome Hotel

There's no way we could afford to stay overnight here given the average price of 300€ ($450 cdn) per night, but enjoying a well deserved rest at a table-for-two with a lovely glass of wine as we soak in the gorgeous view and superb ambiance is totally doable!

On our right fishermen return with their catch of the day

A short distance from the fishermen is the Chapelle de Saint-Pierre des Pecheurs. Dedicated to the safety of village's fishermen its interior was painted by the artist Jean Cocteau, and while we've been a number of times to Villefranche-sur-Mer our visits have never coincided with visiting hours to the chapel.

That said, I found a lovely photo online of the interior of this small chapel and we've fingers crossed we can see it in person in May 2020 when we return to Nice.

When we began the day I assumed we'd take the bus back to Nice, but fortified by the delicious French wine 😉 I suggested we return by foot. It was the correct decision as it offered another perspective of the stunning, awe inspiring views around every corner.

When we reached this building (see arrow above) I turned to face eastward and captured this lovely view of the rugged Mediterranean and the Princess Grace de Monaco Blvd.

I'm certain we'll walk to Villefranche-sur-Mer on our next visit to Nice and look forward to experiencing this spectacular coastline once more - and of course that glass of wine is always a welcome treat!
