Winterlude: Ice Sculpture Competition

It's Winterlude in Ottawa (January 31 - February 17) and the Ice Sculpture competition took place on Sparks Street this past weekend.

It drew contestants from around the world and throngs of onlookers. Sadly, we didn't make it downtown until today and as the temperature has hovered around and above the zero Celsius mark the past few days some melting has taken place. Nonetheless, we were thoroughly impressed by the creations.

Team Latvia created this first place winning entry

Spaced along the street were a number of ice sofas. I can't blame John for standing as it was c-c-c-cold out there today!

By this point our fingertips were frozen and the ice cup outside of Tim Horton's made us think bistro so we wandered down toward Metcalf Street and Le Moulin de Provence for a coffee and sweet treat.

This afternoon John went cross country skiing along the Ottawa River Pathway and returned with these gorgeous photos.

All in all it was a lovely winter's day in the Nation's Capital.
