Even before this week's heavy rainfall there was evidence all around that winter in Portugal's Algarve will soon be a distant memory. The fields are a carpet of colour.
Confession time. While I love flowers I know only the basics re names and definitely do not have a green thumb. (Or any live indoor houseplants for that matter.) I just happen to appreciate their beauty and I'm content to leave it at that. Still, I'll make a wild guess these next two are of the same variety but different colours! (The blooms, btw, are about 3-4 inches across while the entire low-lying plant makes a wonderful a ground cover.)

No idea what these next trees are, but the flowers are lovely.
Succulents and cacti are everywhere in the Algarve. This plant is about four to five feet in height.
This little fellow's home is a pot on the sidewalk outside of someone's front door.
We discovered this impressive cactus hedge (10 feet tall) on a farm on the outskirts of town.
It too is on the verge of blooming.
A row of these plants line the walkway to lighthouse below.
Notice the blanket of yellow flowers?
These two sit on a sidewalk at the intersection of two narrow streets in Lagos.
It's difficult not to be impressed by this amazing tree that seems the perfect adornment for this windmill cafe that is not far from our apartment.
At the bottom of our street a curved wall separates a home and yard from the street. High above the wall are the same trees and glorious orange flowers.
My favourite, however, is this understated pot, and yes, I know there aren't even any flowers.
Last but not least is this amazing tree we spotted by the wall laden with blooms.
Springtime in the Algarve is a sight to behold!
