Each housesit is an opportunity to get to know an area and live like a local. When an opportunity arose near Halifax, we jumped at the chance and are grateful to Colin and Laura for making it become a reality. Their cozy, comfortable home in Dartmouth is a short fifteen minute walk to downtown and the harbour.
Their Old English Sheepdog, Murphy, made our stay all the more enjoyable. This 89-pound canine is quite the gentle giant and he garnered quite a lot of attention. One passerby called him "Handsome" and we can't argue with his assessment!
It's a given as a housesitter to be aware of the location of the vet and this particular one deserves mention due to the array of animals on guard outside the clinic.
Included were elephants, giraffes and cheetahs - oh, my!
Also in downtown Dartmouth is this former school. We couldn't verify its new purpose we suspect it has been transformed into a condo. In any case, the sculpture of an oversize School Chair and accompanying eraser by Ilan Sandler is impressive. Look carefully and you'll see John standing beside the front left chair leg.
Dartmouth harbour and ferry terminal is a delightful community hub with various shops, artist stalls and booths.

One lovely feature of the ferry waiting room on the Dartmouth side is the a piano. Many talented individuals, both young and old, took a seat and entertained their fellow passengers before the ferry sailed.
Many modern condominiums straddle the harbour and the views, even from ground level, is stunning.
Slightly inland is this park area and Sullivan Pond. It is part of the Shubenacadie Canal Waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Bay of Fundy. Of course, it captured John's attention and he immediately mentioned kayaking the entire length of the canal!
On our walk back home we admired the local architecture.
And soon realized we were also being watched!
Waiting patiently at home was Murphy who's presence made for such a lovely, enjoyable and memorable two-week house and pet sit on Canada's east coast.
