Charles Negre Photography Museum, Nice, FR

During the first week of our housesit in Nice we visited the Photography Museum conveniently situated alongside the Flower Market on Cours Saleya.

From the exterior it appears to be a rather drab, unimpressive building, but those thoughts are banished as soon as one steps inside.

The collection is impressive on many levels and even more so as we recognized a number of these famous photographs.

Migrant Mother by Dorthea Lange, 1936

Death of a Republican Solder by Robert Capa, 1936

Greta Garbo by George Hoyningen-Huene,  1955

Marlene Dietrich by Martin Munkacsi, 1936-1940
Marilyn Monroe by Marti Cole, 1959

Ana Karina by Frank Horvat, 1959

Marilyn Monroe - The Last Sitting by Bert Stern, 1962

Portrait of an Asian Girl by Domenico Foschi, 1954

Still Life by Slim Aarons, 1950

In another gallery next door we discovered the photography of Thierry Girard taken on his trip to China in 2001 as well as a number of cases of camera equipment.

Park with Flowers, Hangzhao by Thierry Girard, 2001

The museum is well worth a visit while in Nice and entry costs €10/person. Depending upon your length of stay in Nice, however, we recommend purchasing the museum pass. The 7-day pass offers access to fourteen museums and costs an economical €20/per person.
