One of the wonderful things about housesitting is it allows us to take full advantage of our location. This particular sit is our fourth time in North Bay, but the first opportunity John has had to explore the Mattawa River.
The river begins 3.5 km east of Lake Nipissing on Trout Lake and flows east along a fault line into the Ottawa River.
For hundreds of years it provided a vital link for natives and early Europeans between the Ottawa River and Great Lakes. It was also the main fur-trade canoe route between Montreal and the northwest.
Before John begins exploring in his kayak he takes his motor boat (shown below) to the mouth of the river - that takes 30 minutes.
From here he paddled one hour and fifteen minutes (one way)...
When he reached the portage (below) he decided it was time to turn around and head back home.
But I have no doubt he was tempted to continue paddling - especially when he spotted this tent on one of the islands. Surely, they wouldn't mind an overnight guest!
Meanwhile, back on shore the flowers are in full bloom.
Not that Keegan cares. While John's kayaking he sits patiently, staring at the lake awaiting his return.
