A Chilly Start to 2014

Happy New Year! The cold snap that began LAST year (that sounds so much more dramatic than "a few days ago" continues here in the Great White North.

It was -33C at eight this morning according to the outside thermometer, and it's always registered a few degrees warmer than the numbers provided by the local radio announcer. Brrr.

While we sipped our coffee we may have experienced a "frost quake". It sounded as if a giant tear had fractured the foundation. Keegan jumped, and I did too. The scientific term is cryoseism, meaning a loud boom or sudden crack caused by action in frozen soil or rock saturated with water or ice. Whether or not it was the real deal, doesn't matter. It still makes for a great story, and I learned a new word!

As it was far too cold outside for man, woman, or canine, Keegan decided it was a great opportunity to play indoors. He collected his favourite toys and lined them all up in a row on the kitchen floor.

And then the fun began. He made sure John and I elevated our heart rate to an acceptable level for folks our age who need to exercise daily. He's so considerate and thoughtful!

On Sunday his real mom and dad return from their vacation, and on Monday John and I will say our goodbyes. We're gonna miss him. Especially as this morning we made one teeny, tiny concession that we haven't done before...we let him up onto our bed. Yeah, I know, BAD! But just look at that adorable little face.

Could you have resisted doing the same? Ha! I didn't think so!
