Hillside Town of Peille

I checked and double-checked the weather report and was assured it would not rain in Peille on May 4, so we took the 10:45 bus up into the mountains to explore the village. And as luck would have it...it rained!

John enjoyed the hour-long bus trip there and back, but I found the switchbacks more than a little stressful. Did I mention Peille is a mountainous village and that the road clings to the rock cliff?!

The bus passed through three of these tunnels and on one occasion the driver stopped the bus to judge the few inches leeway he had on either side before venturing through. Ugh!

Upon our safe arrival in Peille we walked along the roadway to get a bird's eye view of the village.

It's possible to get to the pinnacle lookout (in the distance below left) from the village, but for those more adventurous souls there is another way...

...via the swinging bridge barely visible below. Not surprisingly, we passed!

The village itself is charming and inspite of the rain we explored its many streets and alleyways.

Peille is not a touristy town, although it does have a gallery/gift shop (below) and a museum that unfortunately was closed on Saturday.

The rain continued for most of the time we were in Peille and midway through our explorations we ducked into a small restaurant for a cup of coffee.

Finally, after more sightseeing we'd worked up an appetite and ordered lunch at another restaurant.

Both restaurants had seating room for about twelve people max and while there were other diners in the second, I took these photos after we had the place to ourselves.

Not surprisingly when it was time to catch the bus back to Nice the clouds departed and the sun came out. Mais, oui. C'est la vie!
