Sun Dogs, Ice Storms & Sunshine

We were fortunate to miss the freezing rain and power outages that hit the southern portion of the province this past weekend. My cousin posted this photo of his street after the storm on Facebook. Scary.

North Bay got more snow over the weekend (it's really starting to pile up!) and after so many overcast days we savoured yesterday's glorious sunshine. In the afternoon John decided to go cross-country skiing on the lake. Keegan was miffed he couldn't tag along, so he and I headed out a little later for a look see. Keegan's main objective, of course, was to track John down. He spotted him right away.

Me? I spotted the sun dogs. Also called sun ghosts, mock suns, or by their proper latin name parhelia, they're the result of ice crystals, and are seen most often when the sun is low on the horizon.

The closer John got to where we were standing, the more excited Keegan got. I let him off his leash, and whoosh, away he went...straight to John. Keegan insisted they play a game of Catch Me If You Can... (John never can catch him, btw! Keegan's too fast. I suspect both of them will sleep tonight!

We ventured down again this afternoon. It seemed the right thing to do given all that sunshine and the temperature hovering around zero. Wow. Talk about a Canadian heatwave!

The kids a few houses down the lake built a rink, and we could hear them playing hockey. If you look carefully you can see the goal net just out past the dock.

After Keegan and I came inside, John grabbed his cross-country skis. He's certainly getting more use of them this winter compared to last.
