John and I are always up for a new adventure, but this past weekend we learned to be careful what we wish for.
Everything seemed normal enough Friday morning as we packed up for our latest housesitting adventure. We hit the road, and then, it hit the fan! Snow fell, and approximately 20 minutes east of Massey the traffic slowed to a crawl. When an ambulance, the jaws of life rescue unit, and police arrived, we knew it couldn't be good.
Within minutes we were told the highway would be closed for "at least six to eight hours". So, like everyone else, heading toward Sudbury, we backtracked to Massey and took a side road that runs parallel with the highway. By this point there was zero traction, and even though we were basically crawling along it was a treacherous drive. What should have been a 45 minute drive to Espanola, took more than 3 hours.
We were prepared to continue on, but stopped for gas first. There, we learned there had been multiple accidents further east, and the highway between Espanola and Sudbury was also closed. So, unable to travel either west or east we hunkered down overnight at a motel. Fortunately, the highway was reopened Saturday morning and we hit the road at 6AM. We arrived in North Bay by 9 and after a brief visit with our homeowners, they headed to Toronto. Their journey was almost as bad. Normally a 3.5 hour drive took 9 hours.
This morning, however, the sun came out, and with our coffee in hand we admired our incredible view.
Our reason for being here, of course, is a special little guy. Keegan insisted we get outside for a walk, and so, we obeyed. If you've followed this blog you know I have this thing for doors. Here's one just up the street. It's actually a garage.
Keegan enjoyed his walk, and he even volunteered to have his photo taken with John. But he loves being brushed as well, and that was the first thing on our to-do list after our walk. I'm hardly a doggy whisperer, but I think the next six weeks are going to be fun. For all of us!
