Endikai Lake

On October 6 John suggested we return to Endikai Lake with our motor boat (rather than the kayaks) as he thought the fall colours would be lovely. Talk about an understatement. Not only were the leaves impressive as we headed north of town, but so was everything else. Mother Nature truly outdid herself on this day.

We weren't the only "leafers" on the road that day.

The water on Lake Endikai was clear, but shallow as we left the boat launch.

Then, when we rounded the sandy corner and entered the lake proper, the magic began.

I had no idea of the immensity of this lake.

As we motored toward the far end of the lake, it felt surreal in that there was no sense of movement whatsoever.

It was as if we were floating or hovering above the water and the line between where the lake ended and the land and sky began was indistinguishable.

It truly was otherworldly.

One of the most amazing things we saw during our cruise was a soft, thin haze or fog that appeared to blanket the lake no more than three or four feet above the water. Then, we spotted what we feared was an oil spill.

Closer examination showed it to be a natural phenomenon - basically, the closest thing we've ever seen to a horizontal rainbow as every colour was visible.

Horizontal rainbow?

Our destination was an expansive sandy beach at the far end of the lake.

What a glorious day for a picnic lunch, on a calm, serene lake that we had all to ourselves. Not only the leaves, but the silence was golden.

John even went for an after-lunch-dip.

Back onboard our boat for the return journey.

As we approached the entry to the boat launch we spotted a few of the cottages on the lake.

This spectacular cruise called for a selfie once we were safely back on terra firma.

The drive back to Elliot Lake was equally beautiful.

And while the gazebo may have been recently packed away for the winter, its absence did not deter us from taking full advantage of the deck or the final few hours of sunlight. We relaxed with a beverage and snack in hand and enjoyed a game of Scrabble...the perfect ending for a perfect day's outing.
